Look

The appearance of the Apple Watch Series 3

The Apple Watch Series 3 is available in 2 different sizes: 38 or 42 millimeters. The watch case is 11.4 millimeters thick and is available in the colors Space Gray and Silver. I can also choose from a lot of different kinds of watch straps, from silicon to nylon, and from leather to aluminum. I can always choose a strap that suits me best.

The appearance of the Apple Watch Series 4

The Apple Watch Series 4 is available in 2 different sizes. In comparison to the Apple Watch Series 3, the improved watch case is a lot bigger: I can choose between 40 and 44 millimeters Apart from a Silver or Space Gray Apple Watch 4, I can also choose a new, Gold variant. Despite the larger size, straps from the Series 3 still fit. If you have a 38-millimeter strap, it'll still fit on the new, 40-millimeter model.

Screen

The screen of the Apple Watch Series 3

The screen of the Apple Watch Series 3 is the same as that of the Series 2. I can choose from a 38-millimeter screen with a resolution of 272x340 pixels and a 42-millimeter variant with a resolution 312x390 of pixels. Even in bright sunlight, I can still properly see the Apple Watch Series 3 thanks to its 1000-nit light intensity.

The screen of the Apple Watch Series 4

Despite the fact that the width of the Apple Watch 4 is the same as previous Apple Watch generations, it has become longer, and that's why the screen is also about 40 percent larger. This means I don't have to scroll as much to read my messages or notifications. There's also more space available on the screen for apps.

Heart rate functions

The heart rate functions of the Apple Watch Series 3

Apart from focusing simply on fitness, Apple also focuses on health with the Apple Watch Series 3. Apple paid even more attention to registering your heart rate with the Watch Series 3. The new Apple Heart Story app doesn't only show my heart rate per minute, but also my heart rhythm during the day. In addition, I receive a notification if I have a high heart rate when I'm not working out.

The improved heart rate sensor has 3 new functions. I now receive a notification when my heart rate is high and when it's low. The Apple Watch 4 also checks the rhythm of your heart and sends you a notification when it's irregular. On top of that, the heart rate sensor is equipped with the technology to make an ECG. The ECG function is not yet available in the Netherlands.

Processor

The processor of the Apple Watch Series 3

The Apple Watch Series 3 has an S3 processor. This processor is 70 percent faster than that of the Series 2. The integrated W2 chipset is also 50 percent more energy-efficient when using WiFi. Thanks to these new chips, apps open much faster, I can switch between various apps more quickly, and the battery of my Watch Series 3 lasts longer than that of the Apple Watch Series 2.

The processor of the Apple Watch Series 4

The Apple Watch Series 4 is equipped with a processor that's 2 times faster: an S4 Dual-Core processor. Dual-Core means that there are 2 processor cores in 1 processor. This chip controls everything you want to do with your Apple Watch 4. This means I can switch between apps even faster and open them faster, too.

Altimeter and fall detection

The altimeter of the Apple Watch Series 3

The biggest improvement of the Apple Watch 3 is the barometric altimeter. This allows me to measure the number of stairs I use on a daily basis. With the Apple Watch Serries 2, this data was transferred from the iPhone. Now, it's possible to see how many stairs I've climbed without needing to have my iPhone in my pocket.

The fall detection of the Apple Watch Series 4

When I fall while wearing the Apple Watch Series 4, the smartwatch registers this. The Watch Series 4 gives my wrist a tap, sounds an alarm, and shows me a notification. In this notification, I state whether everything is going well or whether the emergency services have to be notified. If I don't move for an entire minute, the Watch Series 4 automatically rings the emergency number. Contacts from my Medical ID are also notified.

Conclusion

The bigger watch case, the larger screen, the improved heart rate functions, and the fall detection make upgrading to the Apple Watch Series 4 worthwhile. A larger screen isn't only more user-friendly, but the larger watch also looks better on my wrist. On top of that, the notifications that come in when you have a high or low heart rate or when you fall give me a safe feeling. I do hope that I never have to receive these notifications. An extra advantage is the fact that the Watch Series 4 is faster than the 3. In short, the Apple Watch Series 4 is a worthy successor!
