Expert review of the GoPro HERO 7 Black
- The HyperSmooth image stabilization allows you to record very stable video images.
- Record videos in Full HD at 240 fps, that you can slow down up to 8 times to create slow-motion recordings.
- Thanks to the HDR function, different exposures of 3 photos are balanced and combined until you have 1 well-lit recording.
- A memory card isn't included.
When I take the HERO 7 Black out of the package, I notice that, apart from the color, it differs little from its predecessors. The HERO 5 and 6 Black are dark gray, but the HERO 7 Black is really black. In addition to the action camera, I find in the package a USB cable, battery, frame, attachment mounts, and the manual. A waterproof housing is not necessary, as the camera is water resistant to 10 meters. The camera feels sturdy and I am curious about its performance.
The HERO 7 Black has HyperSmooth image stabilization. This stabilization makes it look like your images were recorded with a gimbal. This is immediately apparent when I record a video when I'm walking. Your arm has become a kind of stabilizer. To be honest, I did not expect the images to be so stable and smooth. It gives your videos a professional look. This is certainly a plus for the action camera.
Just like with the previous models, you operate the HERO 7 Black via the touchscreen. By swiping, you go to different windows where you can adjust settings. I had to find out where the settings are exactly, but I quickly realized. In addition, you have the voice controls. You turn this on in the menu. Dutch voice control is not available, so you have to speak English. I find the voice control especially useful for example on the bike.
You have various options for accurately capturing subjects in Full HD or 4K quality. With the TimeWarp video you walk around a building at an accelerated pace. If you want to record slow motion images, film at a minimum of 60 frames per second. After you have recorded the video, play it directly in slow motion on the GoPro. Let your creativity run free with the many options.
The image quality is not the only thing that is important with a video. You also want the recordings to have high sound quality. Because the HERO 7 Black requires no housing underwater, the sound quality remains high at a depth of 10 meters. The housing ensures that the sound cannot be picked up as well. Of course, the sound at a depth of 10 meters sounds more muted than when you film above water.
I am very pleased with the GoPro HERO 7 Black. It really surprised me with the HyperSmooth image stabilization that works well in my opinion. In addition, you have various options for recording video images and using your creativity. I quickly mastered the menu and the service. These specifications make the action camera suitable for both novice and professional videographers. The only drawback is that the voice control is not available in Dutch.
