- The 6.3 inch Quad HD screen is large and crystal clear.
- With the double 12 megapixel camera, you can shoot sharp photos.
- The device is waterproof. So you also make photos under water.
- I can bother with the fingerprint scanner at the bottom.
- The device is too big for me to operate easily.
Out of the box
My first thought at seeing the Note 8 is: 'what a huge device!'. When I take the smartphone out of the box, I watch the large 6.3 inch screen, the curved edges and the sleek design. At the bottom is the S-Pen: the signature stylus of the Galaxy Note series. Samsung thus maintains the Note tradition. Where the fingerprint scanner is located at the Note 7 under the screen, it is located at the Note 8 at the back next to the camera.
Even though the appearance of the Galaxy Note 8 looks so streamlined, real beauty is on the inside. Under the bonnet of the device you will find a number of powerful and useful specifications. In addition to my findings about the screen, I tell you more about the double camera, the fingerprint scanner and the S-Pen.
The Note 8 has an AMOLED 6.3 inch Quad HD display. Compared to the Note 7, the screen has become larger and the curved edges have remained. Do you like to watch a series on your phone like me? Thanks to the large screen and the bright colors, all details are clearly visible. The phone is a bit too big for me. If I want to click on something at the top of the screen, I have to hold the Note 8 differently or use the S-pen.
Where the Note 7 had a single camera, the Note 8 has given way to a double 12 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. I like to take photos and have a lot of fun with the camera. I mainly used the live focus mode. This fades the background of a photo, creating a sharpness depth effect. This gives your photo a professional appearance. The 8 megapixel selfie camera is also good for me.
The fingerprint scanner is compared to the Note 7 in a new location at the Note 8. This is getting used to me. With the Note 7 it is located under the screen and with the Note 8 the scanner is located at the back of the device next to the camera. Because the device is so large, I have to adjust my grip to be able to touch the scanner with my finger.
The S-Pen is an indispensable feature of the Samsung Note series and for many people a reason to purchase this device. After trying the S-Pen, I understand why. You navigate easily through the menu and make live notes. Do you suddenly notice something important, but do you first have to unlock your device to write it down? This problem is a thing of the past with the Note 8. You scribble your thought on the locked home screen.
The Note 8 has secretly conquered my heart a bit. Whereas previously I would never purchase a device with such a large screen size, I decided to think differently about it. Unlocking and typing was difficult in the beginning, but after a few days it went well. I am most excited about the camera. I am less enthusiastic about the placement of the fingerprint scanner.
