Compare the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017)

Samsung started the new year by introducing 2 new models in the Galaxy A series: the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) and the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017). At a glance, the two smartphones are identical, but nothing is further from the truth. We'll tell you about the differences and what you as a user will notice of them in this article.

In short: similarities and differences

Look

Glass is great! Samsung has used glass for the (front and rear) casing of the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017). Because of this, the devices have a luxurious feel and a beautiful appearance. The bezels are made of metal, which only adds to that feeling. Personally, I'm not a big fan of pink and gold. The black version is my favorite. They're very chic devices that you can show off. Colleague Ferdinand got a feel for both devices in the video review below.

The cameras

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): high-resolution selfies

With its 8-megapixel selfie camera, the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is a selfie king. Some smartphones have an 8-megapixel rear camera. The A3 (2017) has it as a selfie camera. In short, an 8-megapixel resolution is very high for a selfie camera. A king still bows to an emperor, though: the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017).

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): even-higher-resolution selfies

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): the emperor of selfie land. A 16-megapixel selfie camera is unheard of. You can use it to take pictures that are just as sharp as those of the rear camera of the device. The only different is that the front camera doesn't have a flash, while the rear one does. The Galaxy A3 (2017) is especially good when it comes to cameras. The Galaxy A5 (2017) is exceptional.

Waterproof

Water resistance Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5

The Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017) are dust and waterproof. They've got an IP68 classification, which is the second-best classification. This means the device can be submerged in water up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.

That's good news for everyone who drops their device into the toilet now and then. Or for those people who can't resist answering that one phone call in the rain.

Even dust can't simply enter your phone. In short, the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017) are well protected against the elements, no matter if you're indoors or outdoors.

The screens

Screen Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017)

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017): 4.7-inch HD

The specifications: 4.7-inch HD. That's a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. In an age of Full HD and Quad HD screens, that's not a lot. Is this a problem? That depends on what you're going to use the device for.

If you're primarily going to send messages and surf the internet, this resolution is fine. You'll only start noticing it when you watch photos and videos with a higher resolution than the screen. The quality of what you'll see will be lower than the original quality of the picture or video.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017): 5.2-inch Full HD

Although a lot of smartphones have a Quad HD screen, Full HD is still a good resolution. To clarify: Quad HD is 1440x2560 pixels. Full HD is 1080x1920 pixels. The higher the resolution, the more power a screen needs. That's another reason why a Full HD isn't a bad choice at all.

On top of that, both the A3 (2017) and the A5 (2017) have an AMOLED screen. This is more energy efficient than an LCD screen. Other than that, Samsung features the integrated Always on function. This means you'll always have the latest notifications on your screen without having to activate your phone.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 (2017) are very pretty smartphones made of glass and metal. Both devices have a pleasant feel and can be used easily with 1 hand. Not only do the A3 and A5 (2017) look good, but we can't complain about their performance either. The specifications are good, and you notice this during use. TouchWiz isn't as demanding as it used to be, which means these two devices work smoothly. The strong suits are the cameras and the fact that both phones are waterproof. Do you like taking selfies, and would you like them not to be blurry for once? Both the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) and the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) are an excellent choice. Though the A5 (2017) is just a little better.
