Samsung Galaxy S9 vs Samsung Galaxy S7

2 years after the Samsung Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S9 has come out. The S9 features considerable improvements on both the inside and the outside: for example, the device has a quicker unlocking method, a larger screen, and the camera has new functions. Gotten curious about the differences? Read on quickly.

In short

The Samsung S9 has:

  • A larger screen (5.8 inches vs 5.1 inches)
  • Fingerprint scanner, iris scanner, and facial recognition
  • A camera with a variable aperture
  • 4K resolution video with super slo-mo
  • Powerful and clear sound thanks to double speakers

S9 appearance

S9: Iris scanner and facial recognition

Just like the S7, the S9 is waterproof. The device retains its glass and metal casing. Again, the edges are curved, which makes the S9 feel comfortable in your hand. As far as size goes, the S9 is just a little larger than the S7. With Intelligent Scan, you can unlock the device faster. Your eyes are scanned in the dark, whereas the device recognizes your face during daytime. Prefer to use the fingerprint scanner after all? It's now located below the device's rear camera. The new stereo speakers are impressive: you'll now watch movies on your smartphone with powerful sound.

S7 appearance

S7: fingerprint scanner under screen

As far as looks go, the S7 hadn't changed much compared to its predecessor, the S6: the casing was again made of metal and glass, which provide a sleek appearance. The sides were curved for the first time, which made the device more comfortable to hold. The fingerprint scanner remained on the home button at the bottom off the screen. In addition to that, the S7 was the first Samsung smartphone that was completely waterproof, with an IP rating of 68. The device retained its high-quality mono speaker.

S9 screen

S9: larger, edgeless screen

The S7's successful Quad HD AMOLED screen is also part of the S9. Thanks to deep black levels and a high contrast, colors are vibrant and bright. Instead of a 5.1-inch screen, the Galaxy S9's screen is 5.8 inches, meaning it got a lot bigger. Yet, the device retains roughly the same size as its predecessors, thanks to the edges, which keep getting smaller. The always-on function remains the same as on the S9. Thanks to the energy-efficient AMOLED screen, this option barely uses any battery power.

S7 screen

S7: 5.1" quad HD screen

Just like its predecessor, the S6, the S7 is famous for its screen. The device retained its 5.1-inch Quad HD screen. Thanks to the AMOLED screen, colors are natural and bright, while contrast is high. In addition, Samsung introduced the always-on function. This mean that even when your phone's on standby, it still displays the time, the battery percentage and your new messages. Convenient when you want to quickly check if you've got any messages or what the time is, without having to unlock your phone.

When it comes to its camera, the S9 has taken a big step forward. The number of megapixels on the single camera hasn't changed, but the S9 has received a few interesting additional functions that ensure photos are sharper and clearer. The video function also gives you more options.

S9: super slo-mo and variable aperture

In addition to the S9 retaining its 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, the device has received various additional functions that make photographing and recording even more fun. For example, the super slo-mo video function allows you to capture every detail. In addition, the S9's single camera has received a variable aperture, which means you'll be able to take well-lit photos in any circumstances – dark or bright. Finally, you'll be able to make a personal 3D emoji for the first time, which you can send to anyone with WhatsApp.

S7 camera

S7: quicker focus thanks to Dual Pixel

The S7 received a camera upgrade in the form of the Dual Pixel, which allows the camera to autofocus more quickly. Especially in dark circumstances, you'll be able to take clear, well-lit photos more quickly. The aperture helps with that, too: at f/1.7, the aperture's opening has become larger, which means more light will fall onto the sensor. The 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization ensures your pictures will be sharp even when you accidentally move. The 4K resolution allows you to record high-quality videos.

The S7 is known as a device with a sharp screen and a good camera. With the S9, Samsung has copied the factors that made the S7 successful and even expanded on them. For example, the sharp Quad HD screen has gotten bigger and the 12-megapixel camera has received extra functions such as slo-mo videos, a variable aperture, and avatars. If you enjoy the S7 and use your camera a lot, I would definitely go for the Samsung Galaxy S9.
