How many liters should fit in my hiking backpack?

Backpacking in Thailand or a short hiking holiday through the French Alps? Will you stay in hostels or do you go camping? How big your backpack should be depends on the trip you take. No matter where you go, you'll want to travel from place to place as comfortably as possible. In this article, I'll tell you which size is suitable for which trip.

What are you going to do?

Backpacking and touring

Backpacking and touring

Are you going backpacking and touring? Then we recommend a 55-to-65-liter backpack. Because we all know: the bigger the backpack, the more stuff you'll bring. Stuff that you might not even touch throughout your trip. Since you'll probably be traveling from hostel to hostel, you won't need much more. You also probably have the option of washing your clothes, so you can use the same shirts and pants for much longer.

Don't forget to consider your own height when you buy a backpack. If you're smaller than 1.60 meters, a compact backpack of up to 50 liters will be suitable. In addition, we recommend not carrying more than 20% of your body weight in kilos on your back. This will prevent back injuries.

Trekking backpacks for hiking

Hiking without a tent. Are you going hiking and will you be spending the night in lodgings or cabins? Then we recommend a 35-to-55-liter backpack. These backpacks offer enough room for your clothes, toiletries, and other travel items. Since you're also carrying the backpack when you're walking, you'll want to take as little with you as possible. It's also good if the backpack itself is light as well. And don't forget the gear loops for a walking stick.

Hiking with a tent. If you're going hiking and camping with a tent, you'll need more things. Think of a tent, sleeping bag, cookware, and of course clothes and toiletries. That's why we recommend a backpack of at least 65 liters. If you're taller than 1.90m, you can bring a large backpack of more than 70 liters. Keep in mind that a large filled backpack quickly becomes heavy.

The amount of liters required for your backpack depends on the trip you're taking. No matter where you go, the most important thing is that you travel comfortably. That's why we recommend buying a small backpack if you're going hiking without camping. If you do bring a tent and other camping supplies with you, you should get a large backpack. Are you sleeping in hostels? Then you won't need more than a medium-sized backpack.
