According to our receiver expert
With the Sony STR-DH550, you can experience movies like the director intended them. The receiver's 5.2 channels produce a powerful sound. That sound is reproduced in a clear and realistic way because it's supported by a large number of modern audio formats. In addition, the HDMI-output supports 4K Ultra HD images and sends audio from the television to the receiver via the same cable. You can also easily connect your iDevice or USB storage to the front of the receiver.

I've been using the Sony for a few weeks now, replacing a beautiful Pioneer. Tip: don't push the receiver too hard into the cabinet because you can really damage connections :) In my case, the subwoofer connection no longer worked. My wife said "it's not that bad" for a long time, but when we saw red snow appear on the screen, I had a good enough excuse to look at something else.
I found a rave review after some searching: http://avproductreviews.com/sony-str-dh550-review The sound quality was especially praised. That is very important to me, as we play many different types of music at home. I don't need wifi or bluetooth because I use other devices to stream, so I don't miss these functions on the receiver. We have a brand new Sony TV, a good Kef surround set and use a Raspberry Pi to stream. I also have a PS3 for gaming.
Bought, so, and as usual at Coolblue delivered quickly and without problems. Connecting was easy, because the connections are not completely crammed into corners but more in the middle. That is also better for the final wiring harness. Then connected the microphone and started the audio test in the Flintstone menu (finely workable but really no face!). That lasted only 30 seconds and immediately proved that my subwoofer was indeed not broken :)
That was it: it worked immediately. The sound is tight, without booming bass and the surround is very believable. Image passes beautifully, with no weird stutters or crazy colors, as far as I can tell (I'm a bit better at judging sound to be honest).
In a practical sense, I can highly recommend the remote control. My old Pioneer had such a huge chocolate bar full of impossibly small buttons, but this Sony has a simple, straightforward remote control with large buttons. You don't realize the difference it makes until you use it: I no longer have to stare at small buttons and I no longer touch two at once. I only have 3 inputs, so I don't need fifteen buttons!
The Sony has a number of surround options, which work fine. The UPC cable sounds good; I usually don't feel like changing to Dolby Digital anymore because the Sony amplifier makes it sound great by upmixing stereo. Lazy :)
Finally, I am very satisfied with the HDMI-CEC function. It's really not the same with every device, and the Sony immediately linked well with my (OK, Sony too) TV. Since I operate the Raspberry Pi with my TV remote, it is very handy that I can also change the sound level with it. This always works, and the setup worked well right away (I never got the Pioneer working that way).
For 250 Euros you really have a beautiful receiver at home. Too bad Sony is going to stop doing this!

Nice amplifier. Look very good. Customers are beautifully clear and a lot of power. Always had Technics in the past, but this amplifier can certainly measure up to this. With a good speaker set, this amplifier is not inferior to its much more expensive competitors. It is recommended to use the supplied microphone immediately to calibrate the speaker set, this makes a noticeable difference.
