According to our headphones expert
Listen to your music in silence when you're traveling with Philips SHB8850NC. These noise-canceling headphones block out ambient noise, so only the tones of your favorite songs flow into your ears. You won't be bothered by a cable, as you connect the headphones to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Use the buttons on the ear cups to control the music or to take a phone call. With 1 push of the button, you can also activate Siri or Google Now and give your smartphone voice commands via the integrated microphone. When you're done listening, fold the headphones and put them in your bag.

I have been using this Philips Noise-cancelling headphone for a while now, and for this relatively low price, it is expected to work fine. This is my first noise-cancelling headphone, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but the NC works as I expected. I mainly use it on the train or while studying in the library, where I clearly notice that low tones such as air conditioning are filtered out well. I can imagine that it also works great in an airplane. High tones has more trouble with the noise canceling, and it does nothing with other sounds such as conversations. The NC works best when you're playing music. In silence you will hear a slight high tone in the background.
As far as the sound is concerned, this headphone does its job well with the mid- and high-range sounds. If you like to listen to a lot of bass, then I would look further into another headphone. The bass is very moderate, while the higher tones really come into their own. If you use bluetooth, the sound is unfortunately slightly behind. This is not a problem with music, but it is more or less irritating with videos. If you use the cable, you will not suffer from this. I have not been able to try pairing via NFC. Pairing via bluetooth is very easy and after the first time it is turned on automatically.
The wearing comfort is excellent. After two or three hours you start to feel it in your ears, but that's what you have with on-ear headphones. Compared to other on-ears, I feel I can last longer with this one. Give your ears half an hour of rest every few hours and you won't be bothered by anything. The control buttons are clunky at first, but you get used to it. They are all about the same size and therefore difficult to distinguish from each other just by feel. Especially in the beginning you will have to take the headphone off your head to see if you have the right button, but after using it a few times you get used to it and you know how to find everything blindly. It is also rather inconvenient that you have to hold the on/off button for 4 seconds to turn it on or off, this is very long. It also takes 2 seconds to turn the NC on/off. I am satisfied with calling via the headphone, although I have my doubts whether the person I am calling always understands me well. The battery lasts for a long time, with NC on and via bluetooth it would last 16 hours according to the user manual, unfortunately I haven't been able to try this out completely yet.
The design is very simple and minimalistic. Because the back of the headphones is slightly ribbed, you won't leave fingerprints on the glossy part. A storage bag is not included, but the headphone can be folded very compactly, so that it takes up little space in a bag.
All in all, with these headphones you have a great noise-cancelling entry-level model for a low price. If you have a small budget, this one is perfect. If you can spend a little more, it wouldn't hurt to look for a slightly higher class.

Had a JBL Bluetooth headset before, with which I could be about 5/6 meters away from my phone and then the connection was not broken. With the Philips, the connection is already unstable when my phone (fairly new) is in my pocket.
