The type cover is necessary in my opinion if you buy a Surface. The keys are backlit which looks nice, but more importantly, they also type perfectly, the feedback is almost the same as my macbook keyboard. The glass trackpad is large and feels good. In my case, everything works perfectly as expected. Only funny thing is the fact that the "brightness" hotkeys control the backlight of the keys and not the brightness of the Surface. This took me a while to realize as I was standing in a lit room :-)...

The only downside I think is that the keyboard springs up when you use the typing cover "slanted" and not flat on the table, you have to unclip it and lay it flat, then the typing experience is perfect.
