Difficult to use rowing machine

After 25 years of using a similar device from the same supplier, it was time for a new one (piston has failed). What a disappointment! It all started with the assembly: any technical insight is welcome. When using it, I immediately noticed that something was not right. The device is compact, so you always sit with the rowing arms against your knees. Those arms are also very high so you get the feeling that you are always training above your power. In addition, they can move freely which is very inconvenient. Also terribly difficult to adjust and you have to put it on the lowest setting to keep rowing bearable.
