Disclaimer: I know nothing about music, not a note. Bought this unit as a first experience with synth, intended to play with. I have no other aspirations.
First experience: compact packaging, which is also reusable as a case with the supplied elastics. Synth itself, perfectly finished, high quality, feels heavy and solid, not plasticy as you would think when you see the picture. The housing is therefore metal. It also looks very cool I think, not as boring as a black and white synth.
There is no manual, but it is online, it also evolves with the countless firmware updates that have already been released and add features. A downloadable manual in PDF would be useful for those cases where you are offline.
The user interface is very intuitive, within fifteen minutes I was already composing tracks and playing with sound effects. Not bad for never touching a synth. The four knobs each have a different color, and the info on the screen is always in one of those colors, so you immediately understand which knob to use to adjust a certain parameter. The info is also presented in a playful way, with pictures and nice graphics. Not with dry graphics. Ultimately not relevant for the music but it does add to the fun to play with this device.
Without any experience with other instruments, the possibilities with this device seem endless, but without the overwhelming impression I had when trying software like Reaktor. I do wonder how far you can go with the limited storage capacity, for example you can only record 2x 6 minutes, I plan to make a lot of ambient and then I would have liked a little more time.
But those minor concerns aside, from a newbie and hobbyist's point of view: I think this is a really fantastic device, clearly designed with a lot of love and wit, and slightly different from the other synths.
