I had to return this lens, unfortunately, because it had some play at the mount. I didn't realize it immediately, but when I started testing the buttons and rings, I noticed the lens was rotating a couple of degrees back and forth. It didn't move freely, but it didn't take any force to make it switch position. I don't think it has an impact on the settings or on the electrical contacts between the body and the lens (though it must be a close shave), but it's concerning nonetheless. I'm also wondering whether this means it's not fully sealed against dust or moisture, once the elements inside move and might suck in a little of air.
I sure never, ever had this problem with a lens before, and it's also the first time I buy a Tamron product. I must admit the low price for such characteristics seemed too good to be true. But perhaps it's just bad luck, as I've asked around, and people are usually of the opinion that Tamron makes good products nowadays, even though it hasn't always been the case. I'm not scratching Tamron off my potential buy list just yet, but I'll certainly be more reserved next time.
It's too bad because I rather liked the versatility of that lens, which has a wide zooming range, and a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio at 50 mm (1:4 at 400), which isn't bad for a lens of this type.
Also worth noting is that I got off autofocus results a few times, on still subjects in good daylight, which is a little worrying. I've read similar reports elsewhere, so it's wise to double-check if you're indeed in focus before shooting.
The lens is somewhat heavy, which is a consequence of all the glass in it. With a Z6III, you'll handle 1940 g, and with a Z8, you're past 2 kg. Make sure to take a tripod with you. Don't lose light, either, since the lens is down to 6.3 at 400 mm, and you won't be able to rely fully on the VR system, that I found less than satisfactory.
