What is the difference between microSDHC and microSDXC cards?

The world of microSD cards is a complicated one for many people. To create some order in the chaos, I've compared the subtypes for you in this article. This way you can find out what the difference is between a microSDHC and a microSDXC card.

In short

microSDHC microSDXC
Storage Up to 32GB 64GB and more
Devices E.g. telephone, tablet, action camera, 360 camera, drone E.g. telephone, tablet, action camera, 360 camera, drone
Film* up to Full HD 4K and more
Photo* JPEG JPEG and RAW

* Note

Which card you need for your recordings depends mainly on the reading and writing speed of the memory card. Storage size is not always a good guide. Look at your device to determine which card to buy.

MicroSDHC cards

MicroSDHC cards

There is space for up to 32GB on a microSDHC (microSD High Capacity) memory card. Usually you have the choice of a card with 16 or 32GB. These memory cards are most commonly seen in smartphones and tablets. But they also work with action cameras, drones, and 360-degree cameras. What you record with it depends on the write and read speed of the card, but they're usually videos of HD quality, for example.

MicroSDXC cards

MicroSDXC cards

This type of microSD card has the largest storage space of the 3 micro memory cards. With a microSDXC (microSD eXtended Capacity) card you often record up to 128GB of footage. There are also cards of this type with a capacity of 400GB. You will usually find a microSDXC card in phones, tablets, action cameras, 360 degree cameras, and drones. What you record with it depends on the speed of the card. This memory card is very suitable for storing 4K footage.
