The Apple iPad Mini 5 in use

The Apple iPad Mini 5 has the same compact size as its predecessor. But Apple gave this new tablet even larger graphic muscles with the powerful A12 Bionic chip. On top of that, I can also use this iPad with the Apple Pencil (1st generation), allowing me to navigate my apps and take notes even more accurately. I used the Apple iPad Mini 5 for an entire day and tell you about my findings in this article.

Out of the box

Contents of the packaging

The packaging has the recognizable Apple look and feel. I always love the experience of unboxing a new Apple product, and I'm always curious to what the contents of the packaging have to offer. When I open the box, the first thing I see is the device itself. Below, I find some papers, a Lightning cable, and a charger adapter.

The screen

The screen

Time to see what the Apple iPad Mini 5 can do! As soon as I turn on a nature movie, I'm surprised by the clear colors of the screen. Thanks to true tone, the colors automatically adjust to the ambient light. Naturally, I tested this by using the iPad outdoors, too. The 7.9-inch screen makes the tablet very practical in use. I can imagine though that artists who like to sketch would prefer a larger screen.

Performances

Performances

With Apple's latest A12 Bionic chip, the iPad Mini 5 is a true powerhouse. I immediately notice this, since applications start very quickly. While I try to locate the office on Google Maps, the images are very smoothly displayed on my screen. The Mini 5 charges very quickly, and I can zoom in and out very smoothly. In terms of speed, it performs much better compared to its predecessor; the iPad Mini 4 featured an A8 chip.

Apple Pencil support

Apple Pencil support

This is exactly what I'd hoped for: I can also use the Apple iPad 5 in combination with the Apple Pencil (1st generation). I can use the pencil by connecting it to the Lighting port of the iPad Mini 5. I enjoy using the Apple Pencil to take notes and to quickly navigate apps. To do this, I sometimes use my fingers and sometimes I use the pencil.

Handy size

Handy size

Its small size makes sure you can easily take it with you. I can grab it from my purse on the train to quickly make a draft for an article. My hands are fairly small, but I'm able to hold the tablet with one hand only. The design of the iPad Mini 5 is very recognizable; similar to the iPad Mini 4, the screen has bezels, and at the bottom of the tablet, you can find a home button.

Conclusion

Is it useful to switch from the Apple iPad Mini 4 to the Mini 5. Definitely! In terms of speed, the 2 models differ a lot. On top of that, the compatibility with the Apple Pencil (1st generation) is a definite improvement. It's also very easy to take the tablet with me in my bag for use on the go, which makes it even better. Do you like to draw? If so, maybe you should consider a model with a larger screen so you can sketch more accurately.
