Earbuds are put in the round part of your auricle and don't enter your ear canal. Ambient noise will still be audible, so earbuds are suitable for use in traffic. The disadvantage is that the bass of the music is less audible as well. If you wear a helmet, it's nice to wear an earbud underneath, as the earbud isn't pushed in your ear.
