Do you prefer DJing with your laptop? Install Rekordbox DJ to connect your laptop to the XDJ-R1. Handy for old fashioned guys

This Pioneer controller is really a godsend for old-fashioned guys like me. If you have always played with records and CDs, the switch to digital is simply big. With this Pioneer you can simply play CDs. Practically works as CDJs. Mixer is also good. I can do everything I want and normally do with it, plus that I can also play mp3. USB stick with RekordBox output? No problem. I can prepare everything on the computer and load it on the XDJ-r1. And the same stick I take to the club to stick in the CDJ-2000s. Ideal for home. For next to nothing, compared to a set of Pioneer Nexus. Top thing!

Although it is not Pioneer's most compact controller, it is the most versatile. It plays from CDs as well as a USB stick and is also a MIDI controller.

The unit feels like I'm used to from Pioneer and seems to be able to withstand quite a few parties. In terms of functionality, the decks are very complete and the mixer contains the characteristic Color Effects as you see on the DJM800/900.

It is also nice that this controller can be used completely without, for example, a laptop. However, a tablet or smartphone can function as an extra screen. The tablet can take over all the functions that the hardware also has and gives you a clearer overview of everything that is happening in your mix.

Unfortunately, the app that connects to the unit is only for iOS for now and the standard display does not show wavefom. Especially the latter is a loss, especially if you are used to playing with it. And if you then connect your iPad, strangely enough, no waveform is displayed on this either. After a long search for a new DJ set, we finally arrived at the XDJ-R1. After a long search on the internet and reading many stories about errors in the firmware, I had to experience this myself. Via a colleague DJ I was able to test the XDJ-R1 with firmware 1.09 at a small party for a few hours and I was immediately sold. When I got home I immediately ordered a copy via the internet.

First, the device feels very solid. The faders and potentiometers are a bit smaller than I was used to, but they work properly, after playing with the XDJ-R1 a few times, the lack of slightly larger buttons is gone.

The effects work very tight. Everything is linked to the RekordBox beatgrid so that the effects are always in sync. You also have the option to use noise effects and beat effects together and control them with 1 finger via the App Remotebox. This leaves you with one hand to get even more out of the XDJ-R1.

The integration with Remotebox works smoothly and quickly. Looking up songs, effects, looping etc. all works without problems and super fast. Even with an iPad1 it works smoothly. Since the screens on the players are a bit on the small side, it is a requirement for me to work with an iPad. I myself am an all-round DJ with a decent music collection, so you often want to scroll quickly through playlists and tags.

The biggest lack of the XDJ-R1 in my opinion is a wave-form. When this is added via RemoteBox, this device is completely complete. However, Pioneer itself has not yet said whether this is possible or not in a future firmware.
