In the search for a replacement for my old WRT54GL I ended up on the Asus RT-N66u.
A serious precondition for me was the possibility to install an alternative firmware, so that the device could be expanded to my needs.
The RT-N66u is more than enough in that respect: DD-WRT, Tomato or Merlin can be installed without any problems.
In terms of installation, the device is very simple to use: unpack, plug in, possibly use the supplied CD and within 5 minutes you have a rock-solid product from which every network device can benefit.
A simple test with 5 smartphones, 4 PCs and a tablet showed that the device performs its function robustly without any strange behaviour.
Be careful with the power adapter. This has a very small pin as connection which can be bent fairly quickly.
