The scroll wheel is made of metal, but the rod on which the wheel is attached to rotate is wafer-thin, and has already broken off twice, simply by transporting it in the laptop bag (with special compartment for the mouse, please). Opened them up and tried to fix them with contact glue, but this has only withstood 2 weeks of daily use. It's a shame, because it's a nice sleek device...
