According to our heart rate sensor expert
The Garmin Premium ANT+ Heart Rate Sensor (Chest Strap) keeps a close eye on your heart rate. The soft chest strap of the Premium Heart Rate Sensor is much more comfortable than the standard Garmin chest strap. Wear it around your torso, and it immediately measures the rate of consecutive heart beats. Your heart rate is shared with your Garmin GPS device, so you can keep and eye on your most vital bodily function. The Garmin heart rate sensor is an indispensable accessory for the sporty navigator.

I ordered this soft chest strap to replace the standard hard chest strap that came with the Edge 705. Both this and the new soft band showed wrong heart rate values after about a year of use. Then again very low and another time well above 200 before I was on the bike. Replacing the battery has not solved the problem, as well as pre-wetting with extra washing, etc. As far as comfort is concerned, I am very satisfied, just a pity that the values are no longer reliable over time. Reported the complaint to Coolblue and received a new copy within a few days, super service. Now let's wait and see if this band continues to do well. Apparently this is a problem that is more common with Garmin, what could be the solution?

This heart rate sensor is very pleasant to use due to the flexible strap and the virtually imperceptible sensors on the inside of this strap. The standard sensor is made of hard plastic, so you can clearly feel it during exercise.
The premium heart rate sensor is probably purchased with a Garmin sports watch. So you will also find a review of the Garmin 405 HRM chosen by me below.
Because I regularly run and also like smart gadgets, I chose the Gramin 405 HRM.
Other sports watches I have tried are the Polar RS400 and the Suunto T6. Both pretty nice measuring instruments but without GPS. For the Polar I have tried the separate GPS pod. But unfortunately it turned out to be incompatible with Google Maps. The new one is, but it always remains a difficult separate (big) thing.
The Garmin has the great advantage that it has everything in one device, while your watch looks like a normal sports watch.
Possible objections to this type of articles are a difficult "GPS-fix" (searching for the satellites) and poor reception of the GPS signal.
Garmin has delivered a successful product without the above mentioned problems.
Add to that the fact that I can set what information the watch shows while running. (heart rate, distance and calories burned) and you have the main arguments on which I chose this watch.
The fact that after the training, the watch sends my data from my wrist, so wirelessly, to my Apple Macbook, was a nice side effect. (Suunto and Polar both do not support Apple)
I can recommend the premium heart rate sensor in combination with the Garmin 405 HRM from heart.
Have fun with it.

After a few weeks of training (walking) with a Dakota 20, I went looking for a matching heart rate monitor. After some internet research it appears that this should work with the Dakota 20. That research is really necessary, because if you have to do it with the Garmin manual, you won't get there. Hence these experiences.
installation : This turned out to be very simple in the end. Put on the heart rate monitor, go to "Setup" -> "Fitness" on the Dakota and select the heart rate monitor there. Let it search and you're done! "connected". keep in mind that this setting is tied to your profile! Which is very handy, so one profile will search for the heart rate monitor, the other will not.
use during exercise : You can get your heart rate on the screen in several places. I added it to the Trip Meter. You choose one of the fields that you consider less important and replace it with heart rate. After installation as just described, it appears in the list (I had to scroll up!). You can also place it on your screen in many other places, same principle. And again, done. From that moment on you can read your heart rate during exercise.
Use AFTER exercise: this is why i actually wanted this heart rate monitor and here with you to pay attention. Your heart rate is also stored in your GPX track file at every measurement point. so together with speed, height, displacement, time,... Perfect BUT! If you take that GPX file into mapsource, to eg remove the beginning and the end (which I used to do), then mapsource writes that GPX file WITHOUT heartbeat data ! The message is therefore to enter that file directly into Garmin Connect. And then you get fantastic analysis possibilities! so you should only start your track when you start walking and save immediately when you stop ... There are other tools for this, but I haven't looked at them yet;
Is it worth the investment? Well, in my case absolutely yes. What I have clearly learned after a few practice sessions (not surprising for experienced runners) is that I was often training wrong ... Walking too fast, heart rate too high, which works negatively rather than positively! But that's a whole different story that has nothing to do with this review!
Final note : You cannot enter training zones in the Dakota 20, as in other devices. no problem for me, after all I am still running with music and don't hear the beeps :-)
