According to our hiking navigation system expert
Determine your location with military precision, thanks to the Garmin Foretrex 601 hiking navigation system. The navigation system uses 3 satellite systems: GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. Thanks to the 3-axis accelerometer, the 3-axis compass, and the barometric altimeter, you can determine both your location when you're moving and your speed. This makes the navigation system suitable for adventurous hikes in mountainous locations. Easily attach the navigation system around your wrist with the wrist strap. Demanding hikes and bad weather conditions aren't a problem, since the Foretrex 601 is shock, temperature, and waterproof. You'll also be informed at all times, since your devices receives emails, text messages, and warnings from your smartphone.

This is a very handy tool for those who like to go on an adventure. The Foretrex will not let you down, even in extreme conditions. Very precise positioning.

The information about the Foretrex on the internet is still scant, few reviews and few clear YouTube videos. First of all, I notice that the device is a lot smaller than expected, but it does look and feel light. If you already have a Garmin GPS, it is not much different in terms of operation, especially if you know a Garmin Etrex H and/or 10 and the GPSMAP 62 and/or 64 (the yellow versions).
I know that the Foretrex has no maps and my goal was to wear a GPS on the wrist and have my hands free and that the GPS is not dangling from my bag, to follow a route or track and log. Connecting to your cell phone and seeing that you have a message is fun, but useless. That someone calls and you can pick up with your GPS ... well. With Garin Connect you can do little or nothing, it makes your Foretrex more of a fitness device. You cannot upload or download .GPX files.
With a Galaxy mobile phone (I have the S7) and an OTG cable + supplied USB cable you can access your GPS as a mass storage device and transfer files!!! But I can do that with my Etrex 30x and haven't tried it with my 62s yet.
Tried everything in the setting, but I found the GPS very nervous on the screen. Even when I held the Foretrex to my chest, the image jumped more than once, while the GPSMAP 62s, with the same setting as far as possible, immediately pointed in the right direction.
If it is not necessary for the device to be on the wrist, you can just as easily get along with an Etrex 10. The Foretrex 401 is a great solution if you prefer to wear it on the wrist and both are slightly milder in price. You don't have to do it for Galileo right now and Garmin will have to fix some bugs.
I'll stick with my 62s, buy a Garmin backpack tether and think I'll get an Etrex 10 for the kids. You can also make a wrist attachment from the backpack tether. Coolblue sells everything mentioned above, except for the 62 series that has been replaced by the 64 series ;-)
