Asus user for years from n56 until now and always confronted with small changes when switching to a newer model, often brings some annoyance. The tilted typing position, the keyboard is lifted slightly at the back when you open the laptop, is a relief for the wrists and works very pleasantly.
However, the rearrangement of the keyboard, especially the numeric keypad, is a pain point. After years of hitting the '0' centrally, it is suddenly left and has been replaced by the dot. the arrow keys have shrunk with it. The silver keys are stylishly cool, but the legibility, especially with backlighting during the day, leaves a lot to be desired, perhaps a black keyboard with white lettering (or why not anthracite gray?) Laptop loads fast and works decently, and is not laced with bloatware. The explorer folders are already organized and all seem to fall under the online onedrive. Maybe it would be better if you could add folders yourself like with dropbox. Now you'll probably have to rearrange everything if you don't want the documents folder in the cloud. A small problem arises if onedrive does not recognize some characters in, for example, music titles and cannot sync with them. This is rather a Microsoft bug and has nothing to do with the laptop, but it does make the synchronization take ages and meanwhile the fan spins as if it is about to take off. The automatic title adjustment is not working, so we are waiting to see if the synchronization will continue. Windows hello facial recognition works flawlessly, but personally we like a covered camera, you never know. Unlike previous SSDs, this one seems to have a decent transfer rate.
Fan noise is quiet except on load and cloud sync, then it almost rises. I'm surprised there's still no solution to this after all these years. Battery life is really disappointing to us, (with the n580pro also the pain point) it can't be the intention to have to set your screen to pitch dark to stretch this a bit. prefer 100 grams more and 2 hours greater autonomy. Fast charging seems easy, but what if you travel and do not have a charging point nearby or you are on a flight for 6 hours ?? Whether the touchpad is useful remains to be seen. However, you have to set this to full brightness, otherwise the matte surface is not always easy to read, in our opinion. We have not yet looked at what impact this has on battery life. Hopefully not too much because otherwise this will not be used much and give up.
Energy settings: you can no longer control the processor regime, it has been reduced to basic settings. Probably via the reg editor but this cannot be the intention for an out-of-the-box experience. (n580 with i7 we limited the processor to 70-80% so the fans became much quieter)
All in all, a decent laptop that has yet to deliver on its promises. Touchpad, new keyboard layout, battery life,... we'll have to take a look at it all. Hopefully in the future there will be a better compromise between weight and battery life. If the touchpad turns out to be a gimmick in the long run (because of necessity or lack of applications) then it is priced high enough for the specs.
