According to our camera lens expert
The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM is a wide-angle lens with zoom feature suitable for single-lens reflex cameras with an APS-C sensor. You use the lens to capture vast landscapes and groups of people. Easily take a picture of your whole family in front of the Eiffel Tower. The image stabilization reduces vibrations, allowing you to take sharp pictures. Inside the lens, you find a silent focusing motor to ensure that your subject doesn't get distracted by camera sounds. The lens contains special lens elements and coatings to prevent lens errors and to improve the image quality. This results in photographs with a higher contrast and deeper color saturation.

I have been very involved with photography for some time now. Both in the field of taking photos and in the field of post-processing.
I have a Canon 300D and a Canon 50D. With these cameras I have two older Canon EF lenses and a standard kit lens that originally came with the 50D.
In principle, more than enough to get to know a camera well and to try out the many possibilities of a camera.
However, the shooting and editing of the photos was so good that I wanted more. Not so much in terms of range, but especially the light sensitivity could be a lot better than what the standard kit lens delivers.
I searched the internet for a nice alternative. Canon itself provides a very good alternative. The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 with USM. This lens is very well reviewed and through a good friend I had the opportunity to try the lens. I was very excited! However, I was less enthusiastic about the price. The lens is too expensive in my opinion. Especially when you are looking for alternatives.
Sigma provides excellent alternatives to the often much more expensive Canon variants in many categories. This also applies to the EF-S 17-55 mm f2.8 with USM. Sigma has the 17-50 mm f2.8 with IS and HSM for this. An excellent lens that, according to several very thorough practical tests, is certainly as good as the Canon lens. In addition, this lens is part of the EX series from Sigma. This means that extra emphasis has been placed on the build quality and durability of the lens.
In practice, the lens functions fantastically! The lens is very light sensitive over the entire range. The IS (image stabilization) works really great. The auto-focus also works very well. What was also positive in practice is that the lens has a fairly short minimum focusing distance. But above all, great photos can be taken in almost all lighting conditions.
The lens is a lot bigger and heavier than the kit lens, but when using a good, slightly larger camera bag, this doesn't cause too many problems.
I have used both the Canon and the Sigma variant. The only minor downside of the Sigma compared to the Canon is that the Canon AF (Auto-focus) seems to work slightly better in very dark lighting conditions.
For me, the range of the lens was less important than the light sensitivity. If you think otherwise, there is also another alternative from Sigma. The Sigma 17-70mm. This lens has slightly more range, an even shorter minimum focusing distance, but is therefore slightly less light-sensitive over the total range.

This lens stays on my Canon EOS 600D almost constantly!
I bought this lens as an upgrade from the kit lens. The Sigma is much sharper, is more light sensitive and creates better bokeh than the Canon 18-55. The Sigma lets in 2 to 4 times as much light as the kit lens. The AF is very fast and very quiet, which is useful when you need to take pictures quickly and unnoticed. Thanks to the lens hood, you no longer suffer from flares. The lens remains quite small, especially when you compare it to Canon's version. The quality of the bokeh is very good! In terms of overall photo quality, it comes close to the 17-55mm F2.8 IS, which is twice as expensive.
This lens is of course a lot heavier than the kit lens, and can therefore no longer be used on my Sevenoak stabilizer. The filter size is also quite large, namely 77 mm, which makes filters quite expensive. You can also not manually operate the focus ring when it is in AF mode, which is a bit of a shame.
This is a very good lens that you can always leave on your camera, for both video and photo! There are some drawbacks but they are not really disturbing. (If you're in doubt between this lens and the Sigma 17-77mm F2.8, go for the 17-50mm! Especially if you don't really need the macro function.)

The packing and unpacking: The product was neatly delivered in a sturdy box with ditto packaging material. This greatly reduces the risk of breakage during transport. However... with the unpacking I was shocked at first... because there seemed to be something rattling inside the lens itself. After some research on the internet I found out that more people have this with this lens but that it is not a bad thing. The sound/rattle you hear is the optical stabilizer and it hangs slightly loose when there is no power on it. Fortunately, it can't hurt at all and I must also say that I haven't heard the sound since using it.
Use experience: In one word: fantastic. The combination of the optical stabilizer and the fixed light value/aperture of 2.8 allows me to easily take pictures in low-light situations without having to use a flash and that's exactly why I bought this lens! The lens is a lot heavier than what I was used to, but luckily you get used to it quickly.
Conclusion: Very happy with this purchase, this lens is a more than excellent choice for those looking to replace their standard kit lens.
