What's an access point?

An access point is a wired solution to get a strong WiFi signal in places where you have no or little reception now. They're mostly used by companies, but they can also be useful at home. In this article, we'll explain what an access point is and how you can use it.

How does an access point work?

An access point is an extension of your router and works as an extra WiFi transmitter. It connects to your router via a network cable and spreads the WiFi signal, so you have a stable WiFi signal everywhere. This is mostly useful in large offices or buildings where 1 router isn't enough. You can connect an access point wired to routers that have or don't have built-in WiFi. Some business routers don't have built-in WiFi, which makes access points a smart solution.

What are the advantages of an access point?

With access points, you ensure stable WiFi for your entire company. You can connect them to a router wired, and spread WiFi reliably this way. You can also prioritize important network traffic. That way, you ensure video calls receive priority and don't lag or crash even when many people are connected. Do you want truly stable WiFi? Choose an access point with the latest and even fastr WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 connection. You can connect over 100 devices to this.

Access point, mesh WiFi router, or WiFi extender?

In business environments or large buildings, access points are the best option for stable and fast WiFi. You can easily hide your cables here thanks to the dropped ceiling. For households or small offices, a mesh WiFi system is more convenient because you don't need cables. These routers communicate wirelessly, but are less stable and fast than access points. A WiFi extender is a simple but less powerful solution. It picks up the signal and transmits it further, which often results in lower speeds and less stability.

How many access points do you need for good coverage?

The range of an access point is about 15 to 20m, but walls and obstacles weaken the connection. Glass has less of an impact on this. In an office with lots of corners and aisles, it's best to put access points in a central spot, like in the middle of an aisle. How many access points you need depends on the size of your business. For a small business, 1 is often enough. Larger offices need multiple access points for full coverage.

Business use and installation

Access points are mainly designed for business use and need a separate router and network switch. The business functions of an access point help you keep your network secure. You can create more wireless networks and decide who gets access to which files. You can also control when guests can go online with a password that expires automatically, for example. Access points are always connected via a wired connection. If you choose a model with Power over Ethernet (PoE), the power runs through the network cable and you don't need a socket.
