How do you descale a humidifier?

A humidifier humidifies the air using water. The water is stored in a water tank. Since the water contains limescale, there's a good change that it will affect the humidifier. To keep your humidifier in excellent condition, it's important to descale the device every now and then. Use natural vinegar or a suitable descaling agent to descale the humidifier. Below, you'll read how best to use both ways for the best result.

Descaling with natural vinegar

  • Empty the water tank.
  • Dry the interior of the water tank with a dry cloth.
  • Fill the humidifier's water tank with natural vinegar. If you have a humidifier with a 6-liter tank, fill the tank with 6 liters of natural vinegar.
  • Leave the vinegar in the water tank for at least 30 minutes.
  • Pour the vinegar from the water tank.
  • Rinse the tank with water to get all the vinegar out. You can of course also choose to clean the tank with a damp or dry cloth.
  • Fill the tank with water to use it again, or dry it well if you plan on not using the humidifier for a longer period.

Descaling with a descaling agent

  • Empty the water tank.
  • Prepare the descaling agent according to the instructions on the packaging.
  • Pour the descaling agent in the water tank. Read how long it will take the descaling agent to do its work in the manual.
  • Use a sponge to clean the edges that don't come into contact with the descaling agent.
  • Pour the descaling agent out of the water tank.
  • Fill the tank with water to use it again, or dry it well if you plan on not using the humidifier for a longer period.

  • Think it's wasteful to throw out so much vinegar after 1 cleaning? Pour the vinegar back into the bottles using a funnel. That way, you can use the vinegar again.
  • If limescale builds up sooner than expected, increase the frequency at which you descale the device. The hardness of the water and the use of the humidifier influence the amount of limescale.
  • You have to leave the vinegar for at least 30 minutes, but the effect will be greatest if you leave the vinegar in the water tank overnight. That won't harm the water tank.
