Expert review Meta Quest 2

The Meta Quest 2 is an active VR headset, which means that you can game anywhere. Because I don't need a computer, I can play in the whole house or the office without being tied to a cable. I do have to connect the headset to WiFi to use it, of course. So I can't actually game anywhere, unless I use my phone as a hotspot.

This Meta Quest 2 has a single LCD screen. This sounds less luxurious than a dual OLED screen, but it's an improvement in practice. The resolution of the Quest 2 is noticeably higher than the resolution of the screen of the Meta Quest. This way, games look more realistic and the image is sharper. In addition, the refresh rate was increased from 72 to 90Hz. As a result, I can enjoy it more. That's because the sharper the in-game images, the more realistic the virtual world looks.

The controllers of the Meta Quest are comfortable to hold. They're not too big or too small, and I can easily push every button. The controllers don't have rubber grips, but I can still hold them firmly. The only downside of the controller is the lack of feedback of the bumper buttons. You can press these with very little power, so I sometimes don't even notice I press the bumper at my thumb.

The headset has stereo speakers. The volume can go loud enough, but I need to put on an external headset for a better experience. If I'm in my own virtual reality, a good surround sound completes the experience. It's a bummer the audio is average. I don't have the feeling like I'm in the middle of the game with this audio level.

As soon as I put on the Quest 2, I notice it's lighter than the Meta Quest. This Quest 2 is more than 10% lighter than its predecessor, because it weighs about 500g. That increases the wearing comfort. But I think I can improve the wearing comfort even more if I replace the standard headband with the Elite Strap, for example. That allows me to accurately adjust the headband, so the VR headset rests more comfortably on my head.
