How should you dose your detergent?

You use a different amount of detergent for each type of laundry. This depends on how much laundry you have and how badly soiled it it. The dosage also depends on the type of detergent. Always read the dosing advice on the bottle if you want to know the right dosage. This tells you how to dose your detergent.

How much detergent you need depends on 3 things:

  1. How much laundry you have.
  2. Whether your laundry is lightly, medium, or badly soiled.
  3. The water hardness.

Consider the amount of laundry

The more laundry you have, the more detergent you need. A 0.75L bottle often has a cap that fits about 40ml. This is actually already too much for a full drum of laundry. You don't need more than a soda bottle cap for this. Want to use more detergent? Add an extra rinse cycle to the wash cycle. That way, you can be sure all the detergent is rinsed out of your laundry.

Check how soiled your laundry is

If you want your clothes to come out thoroughly clean, you should use more detergent if your laundry is badly soiled. For example, when you've spilled wine on your new shirt. Or if you have kids that like to play outside. Keep in mind that your laundry loses its color more quickly when you use more detergent. For a lightly soiled laundry, you should ideally use less detergent. That way, your laundry will look nice for longer.

Check the water hardness

The water hardness also plays a roll when you dose your detergent. The more lime in the tap water, the harder the water is. You'll need more detergent for a clean result. On the website Waterhardheid.nl, you can check the water hardness in your municipality.

Automatic detergent dosing

Choose automatic detergent dosing

If you want to be sure that your laundry comes out clean, choose a washing machine with automatic detergent dosing. The washing machine automatically adds the right amount of detergent, so you don't use any more than necessary. This way, you save detergent and your laundry looks good for longer. It's even better for the environment. When you use too much detergent, it takes more rinses to drain away the detergent. With a washing machine with automatic dosing, you contribute to a better environment.
