5 tips to get rid of stripes on your TV screen

Are there horizontal or vertical stripes running across your screen? In this article, I'll give you some tips to solve this problem.

5 tips to get rid of stripes on your TV screen

Follow this step-by-step plan to solve problems with your TV:

  • Tip 1: turn the TV off and on.
  • Tip 2: check the cables and connectors
  • Tip 3: switch between sources.
  • Tip 4: update the software.
  • Tip 5: reset your TV to the factory settings.
  • Tip 6: refresh the OLED display.

Tip 1: turn the TV off and on

Turn off the TV, unplug the connector from the socket, and wait 2 minutes. You can then plug in the connector back into the socket and turn the TV on again. This solves 9 out of 10 issues with a TV screen. Do you still see stripes? Go to tip 2.

Tip 2: check the cables and connectors

Remove all HDMI cables from your TV and connected sources. Check the connectors on your TV and your other devices, like a gaming console or media player. Too much dust in a connector can already cause issues. If there's nothing wrong with the connectors, check the cables. Connect your HDMI cables one by one and check when you see the stripes. This way, you can check whether all your HDMI cables are working properly.

Tip 3: switch between sources

With your remote, switch between TV programs and other video channels of the connected sources. Do you only see stripes on the source of a specific device? The TV isn't the problem. Check whether the device is set up properly, for example. Adjust the resolution of the device to the used resolution on the screen. You can find the resolution in the manual of your TV. Do you see stripes with certain TV programs? Your decoder might be the problem. In this case, contact your provider.

Tip 4: update the TV software

Sometimes, the software of the TV needs an update. The older the software, the bigger the chance of problems. That's because TV brands only maintain the software of later models. Want to update your TV? Go to the general settings and find the software update option. You can check where you'll find this in the manual of your TV.

Tip 5: reset your TV to factory settings

It's also possible that you adjusted too many settings and can no longer see everything clearly because of it. In this case, you can reset the TV to factory settings. This sets the TV back to the settings when you bought it. For most TVs, this option is available via the general settings. If you can't find this option, check the manual of your television

Tip 6: refresh your OLED display

Did you buy an OLED TV? It might be worth your while to manually refresh the pixels of the screen. Modern OLED TVs do this automatically to reduce the risk of burn-in, but this isn't always the case with older models. Find the settings in the meny of your TV and select this. You can read how to do this exactly in the manual of your TV.
