How water-resistant are your earbuds, headphones, and speaker?

When you buy water-resistant earbuds, headphones, or a speaker, it can be confusing how water-resistant the product really is. You can recognize the water resistance by the IPX certification. In this article, we'll explain how water-resistant each certification is. That way, you'll know what you can and can't do with your product.

What's IP?

The IP code stands for how dust and water-resistant electronic devices are. The higher the value, the better the protection. The first number indicates the dust resistance, the second the water resistance. Does a product have an IPX1 or higher certification? There's no information on the dust resistance. When a product doesn't have an IP certification, it's not water-resistant.

IPX1 and IPX2: protects against drops

With an IPX1 or IPX2 certification, your earbuds, headphones, or speaker are protected against raindrops. It does depend on the way the drops hit your product. For example, there won't be water damage with IPX1 when the drops fall onto the top or bottom of your speaker. With IPX2, your product is protected from drops that come from a 15° angle. These 2 certifications don't protect your product well from rain.

IPX3 and IPX4: protects against splash water

With IPX3 and IPX4, your audio product is protected against splash water. With this certification, your earbuds or headphones will better survive heavy rainfall than with lower certifications. When someone jumps into the pool and splashes water onto your speaker that's near the edge of the pool, there won't be water damage either.

IPX5 and IPX6: water-resistant

From IPX5 and IPX6, your earbuds, headphones, or speaker are almost completely protected from any water coming onto your speaker. A heavy workout, heavy rainfall, or a glass water that tips over. Products from this category will survive it all. You just can't submerge your products in water.

IPX7 and IPX8: waterproof

With an IPX7 or IPX8 certification, it's possible to submerge your product. With IPX7, you can do this for up to 30 minutes up to 1m deep. This allows you to easily rinse your earbuds, headphones, or speaker when they're dirty. A product with IPX8 certification can go deeper than 1m deep. How deep differs per product, that's why it's useful to check the manual for precise information. You can't swim with these products.
