I was looking for a compact DAB+ (digital) radio for the kitchen that also has bluetooth to easily stream Spotify music from my smartphone to the radio. First saw the Pure Evoke D2, a very nice retro model radio with an excellent rating of “What HiFi”. This speaker appears to be for sale in different variants, including the Pure Evoke D2, Pure Evoke D2 Bluetooth and then you have a new variant with nice colors called Pure Evoke D2 Mio BT (bluetooth).
To my great surprise, the Pure Evoke D2 Bluetooth (color: black) costs just as much as the "regular" Evoke D2 without bluetooth, both 139 euros (Mar-15). The Pop Maxi is also equipped with bluetooth and can be equipped with a battery (optional). The Pop Maxi (unlike the Evoke D2) can also handle regular AAA batteries. So if you still have a few (rechargeable) ones lying around, it's cheaper if you also want to use it portable.
Contrary to what the name “Pop Maxi” suggests, you still have a compact radio at home. The Pure Pop Maxi is a sleek DAB+ radio that would not look out of place in many interiors. It is slightly smaller than 2 cartons of milk horizontally on top of each other. The Pop Maxi (with me) receives many digital DAB+ stations very easily, even without extending the antenna! In addition, you can also simply choose FM stations. Both are well received. I noticed that the regular FM stations are slightly louder than the digital stations.
With the bluetooth function you can easily connect your smartphone or tablet to the radio, super handy to stream Spotify or provide a Youtube video with much better sound than your smartphone or tablet can. Installing preset channels is a piece of cake. Search for the desired station and hold the button (1 to 5) for a few seconds, station saved. The sound is fine and the radio plays loud enough. I did set the bass and treble 2 steps higher. All in all a great radio and for 139 euros (indeed, as expensive as the Evoke D2), a great purchase that I am happy with.
Still, one more tip that might be worth considering. If you have a smartphone, you can of course listen to digital radio with it, there are plenty of apps to download. When you then connect a good bluetooth speaker such as the Denon Envaya Mini for 99 euros, you also have digital radio which you can also easily take with you. The Envaya Mini is the size of a pastry bar, is water resistant, is equipped with the latest bluetooth standard apt-X, equipped with NFC and has a built-in battery. Ideal for at home, but also in the garden, on the beach, etc. And the sound of the Denon Envaya Mini bluetooth speaker? Ha, will surprise you! That is a banquet bar with powerrr and a beautifully balanced sound. Much better and louder than these Pure radios. Won't be a better alternative for everyone, but might be worth considering for some.
If it really needs to be an all-in-one DAB+ radio, I can heartily recommend the Pure Pop Maxi in any case!
