According to our smartwatch expert
Thanks to the integrated GPS you'll know exactly how far you've walked.
With the integrated heart rate monitor, you measure your heart rate via the wrist.
The display shows you the time and how many steps you've walked today.
Competing against yourself using a Virtual Partner function isn't possible.
You can't decide between an activity tracker or a sports watch. Actually, you think one of those GPS sensors is quite handy because you can review your routes. The Garmin Vivoactive HR is an activity tracker with integrated GPS and heart rate sensor. In addition, it measures your steps, distance traveled, sleep, and makes an estimate of your calories burned. Do you prefer being up-to-date? You can leave your phone in your pocket while you're exercising, because you'll receive notifications on your watch and you'll never miss that important phone call. Winter and water sports enthusiasts can use an app to keep track of their sports performances.
The Garmin Vivoactive HR comes in 2 sizes: normal and XL. Normal has a wrist circumference of 137-195mm. XL has a wrist circumference of 162-224mm.
This is my first sports watch and overall I am very pleased with it. I do 3 different sports, namely; cycling, rowing and swimming. As far as I can find, the Vivoactive HR is the only sports watch (except for the much more expensive Garmin fenix) that supports these and many other sports.
The watch really supports a lot of sports, everything from the basic stuff like running and cycling to stand-up paddle boarding and cross-country skiing. In most sports, the heart rate is tracked and your distance and speed are also tracked via GPS. It is completely possible to set what you want to see on the screen during exercise, this can be the usual things like speed and heart rate, but also specific things like a SWOLF score for swimming or the number of strokes per minute for rowing.
I am most satisfied with the performance while cycling, the GPS is very accurate and also shows the speed well. It also does not take long at all before it has good GPS reception, within a few seconds it is usually OK. During cycling, the heart rate monitor is also the most reliable. It sometimes happens that it loses your heartbeat for a while, but never for long. You can also set it to automatically pause below a certain speed if, for example, you are standing in front of a traffic light.
During rowing, it keeps track of the number of strokes per minute, speed and stroke distance. Also in indoor rowing, the number of strokes per minute is perfectly tracked. But when rowing, the biggest downside of this watch comes up, the heart rate monitor doesn't work well if you move your forearm a lot. I've had training sessions where he thought I had an average heart rate of 56, of course this is not correct and makes the heart rate measurement useless. Fortunately, the watch can be linked to a chest strap heart rate monitor via ANT+ or Bluetooth smart so that you can still have a good heart rate measurement.
The heart rate monitor is switched off while swimming, this is probably because the water is hindering a good measurement. The things that are measured are very accurate. You have to set in advance how long your pool is and then the watch can keep track of how long you swim per lap, how many strokes you make per lap and your SWOLF score. Your total distance and time are of course also tracked.
The watch can also be used as an activity tracker, which tracks your steps, the number of stairs climbed and your sleeping hours. Your heart rate is also measured every minute and your daily calorie consumption is calculated on the basis of this.
I am also satisfied with the watch itself, which is a lot smaller than I expected. it is also comfortable and I often forget that I have the watch on. The Vivoactive HR is made entirely of plastic, I think the screen is made of scratch-free glass because after a month and a half there is not a scratch to be found. Even though the screen isn't scratched yet, I wouldn't do any extreme sports with it anyway, it doesn't feel like it would survive a good knock. The battery is also good, after five hours of sports with GPS in a week and not really being used, it still has over 50% battery left.
The software is also good, all important things are easy to find. The overviews and summaries of your activities are all clearly displayed. It only takes a few minutes to sync with my phone via Bluetooth. I often connect the watch to my PC via USB, then it is done in a few seconds and it also charges. If it is synchronized with your PC, your phone also immediately receives all the information. It is also possible to link your Garmin account with Strava, your data will then be sent almost immediately and this goes smoothly.
In general, I am very satisfied, but I think it is a shame that the heart rate monitor cannot be used for every sport.

it's a gift for my wife, she wanted this one as she wants to use it for swimming too, this is the only activity tracker that had all the features she wanted. and as reported, the watch "tells" if my wife needs to move, I don't have to anymore

If one of your goals is to become more active, the Vivoactive HR will certainly not disappoint. It is an activity tracker, a GPS/Glonas sports watch, which is waterproof, which shows your heart rate 24/7, and has smartwatch functionalities.
It's the ideal personal fitness coach that tracks various activities such as steps, calories burned, your sleep, intensity minutes and much more. The motion bar reminder will vibrate if you are inactive for too long to remind you to get up and move a bit. This contributes to a more active day, making you feel much fitter than before.
The built-in 24/7 wrist-based heart rate monitor is surprisingly accurate for all-day and cardio activities. With strength training, it may be the case that it is less accurate, because you exert your arms much more. It is therefore a plus that you can pair an external heart rate monitor with this watch, if you want very accurate heart rate data during strength training sessions.
Since the Vivoactive HR is waterproof up to 50 meters, you can also swim with it and it can also remain on your wrist while taking a shower, for example. The built-in GPS/Glonas functionality means that you can run and afterwards in the app on the smartphone or on the website, you can look back at your route, your lap times and possibly compare with other people in your friends list who have also followed those routes with which you For example, you want to do a competition.
Furthermore, the Vivoactive HR has the option to be paired with your smartphone in order to pass on all kinds of notifications. For example, you can read text messages, emails, whatsapps, see who is calling you and much more. In addition, with the Vivoactive HR you can also manage your music that is played via your phone.
With an average battery of 5 to 7 days, it's hard not to be impressed with this sport/smartwatch and with the Garmin Appstore, the possibilities this product can offer are endless due to the apps that are also built by the community.
In short, I am very satisfied with the product and can definitely recommend it!
