My review. Only read if you are extremely critical like me. :-) I wanted a razor that could rival that of a knife.
Last year I decided to put an end to this and bought a Braun Cooltec with cleaning station. Very nice about that device was the cooling element that actually provided cooling. Unfortunately, it didn't have the shave I was used to from my Gillette razors. On the contrary, the device pulled hairs from my face as a kind of punishment. Resulting in bleeding and irritated skin. Besides that, it wasn't always smooth and I often had to go back and forth over the same spot. I then decided to get rid of the device and start using my razor blades the old-fashioned way again.
Until this month I was tempted to try again. Not with a shaver of €119,- but I wanted the very best out there to see if electric shaving really met my strict requirements, namely: shaving as close as possible without irritation and above all faster than with a razor.
Because I am personally not a fan of Philips, I liked the Braun 9 series the best. Now I have to say that I was partly persuaded by the 100-day money-back promotion, and the cashback promotion of €60.
Unpacked and it is immediately noticeable that it is a beautiful, complete set that you don't have to do much anymore. You get a travel pouch, cleaning fluid, brush, the shaver itself, not to mention the cleaning station.
Once I got my hands on the shaver, I was immediately sold on the finish. The device feels solid, has a luxurious appearance and is robustly constructed.
The cleaning station on the other hand has a simpler finish, made of black plastic, and is the same that comes with the cheaper Braun shavers with cleaning station. Maaaaaar....! This cleaning station does have some more functions.
The shaver in use Most important of all. Because the device itself can still look so nice, but without a close shave I wouldn't keep it. Braun recommends shaving BEFORE showering. The opposite of what I always did with a razor. I have to say that, with my oh-so-sensitive skin, it was not that bad that I didn't get any irritation from this. The first time I consciously tried with shaving cream but didn't really find it a success. The second time without shaving cream and amazingly no irritation or tugging. The device shaves nicely, sometimes after a few spots. You have to go over this a little more often. The flexible head is very nice, I never had the idea that the shaver did not fit the contours of my face. Of course you will never achieve the exact result you get with a knife, but critically it comes pretty close. I think it might be the best shaver for a close shave. A few times with longer beard growth I noticed that you have to take it easy, because if you want to go too fast you will notice that the device is pulling a bit every now and then. That's not very pleasant. However, it is wonderful to finally be able to shave quickly and without shaving foam. I don't use the trimmer, because I didn't really think it was a success. Little result and a lot of dirt that sits in the trimmer which is not cleaned.
The cleaning station in use As mentioned, the cleaning station is the same in appearance as that of cheaper sets from Braun. The cleaning station also does the same, only contains about 2 additional functions: For example, it has a fan that continues to run for 40 minutes after cleaning to dry the shaving head and it automatically chooses the right cleaning method based on the amount of pollution. This indicates the station by means of a droplet where 1 stands for eco, 2 for normal and 3 for intensive. With me it was always the latter, I didn't have the idea that I could achieve 'eco' at all. Now I'm not really into the whole 'eco' story so that's not an issue for me. The fan can be disturbing if it is in a place where you will be for a long time after cleaning and are not waiting for a blowing sound. The fan continues to dry for 40 minutes after cleaning. Once the device is ready, it is also really clean. I don't see any hairs anymore, and the shaving head is like new again! The only thing I regret is that there is not really a possibility to easily take the cleaning station with you. You notice that this station is not intended for this.
