I have been a happy Synology NAS user for many years. This replaces a DS412+. Besides the media storage, I also run a lot of Docker containers on it. So it's more of a server than NAS to me. But then one that is a lot more economical than a standard PC, and one that is easy to manage and is robust. This model is of course more intended for companies, but it also seemed fine for a demanding consumer. I did put in 16GB of RAM myself. Together with the smooth CPU, you can now do a lot more with it than just store files.
It's a big device. I don't have a 19-inch rack at home, so it's on a cupboard in a walk-in closet in the hallway. So no problem for me, but I can imagine that a DiskStation model is more convenient for home. There are some small fans that make a bit more noise than the large fan of the DS models, so I can't recommend putting it in the living room.
It has the possibility to place a 10 Gbit ethernet card, but for now the 4x1 Gbit are enough for me.
The hard drives sit and slides, which are protected with a simple (plastic) lock against accidental removal. It won't help against theft.
As usual, Synology's software is fine, and installation is a breeze.
