According to our NAS expert
Complete the multimedia setup in your living room with the QNAP HS-453DX-4G NAS. Thanks to the compact size and the neat design, you won't need to hide the NAS in a cupboard, because it'll look fine on your TV cabinet. Place a hard drive into your NAS, upload your favorite movies, then stream them to your television in 4K. The HS-453DX has 4 slots for HDDs or SSDs, which let you store up to 56TB worth of movies. That's enough for more than 1800 hours of 4K footage. The HS-453DX is also very suitable for sharing files in a network and creating a backup. The 10GbE ethernet connector and HDMI 2.0 output ensure fast data transfer.

I have been using this NAS for 2 years now, mainly as a desktop NAS in our living room. I chose it because it has no fans, totally silent, has 10 GbE.
I use it with four SSDs, 2x 4TB SATA, and 2x 2TB M.2 SATA (in Raid 0). Please do note that the SSD slots are M.2 SATA (same slow interface as for the Hard Drivers), and not M.2 NVME. If you use the NAS with 1 GbE, this doesn't matter, but I upgraded to 10GbE.
I don't use the included remote, but if you hook it directly to a TV to play movies from it, it is useful to switch on/off an basic funtions.
The software is very powerful, with lots of apps, many backup solutions, can integrate with Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. stream to a TV or other device, can connect to a VPN server, itself can be a VPN server, has download servers, can work as a small computer with mouse and keyboard if you add, basically whatever you want. Search for QNAP App Center.
Setting it up however takes some time, and if you have never ever used a NAS before, it can be a bit confusing at first, but follow the manulas.
The software overall is great, has also a smartphone app. All QNAP NAS uses the same software, and it is great that they make available all the powerful features.
The only thing I miss it cannot stream mkv files with x265 or H265 codec out of the box. It can play H265 by buying a 20 USD licence. But anyway, I mostly use it as a file server, and not as a PC to play movies on a screen. Sometimes I stream video to VLC player installed on my android phone.
If you want a similarly fan-less, completely silent switch to use with it, I recommend the QNAP QSW-308-1C. Pay attention that wired 10GbE makes a lot of heat, and if you convert SFP+ optical ports to wired, they will overheat the system, and it will freeze (a common problem with the popular Microtic) router.
A popular setup for this NAS is 2x HDD (2-4-8 TB), and install 2x M.2 SSD for caching.
The speed for the HDD is usually 100-110 MB/s for file reading-writing, which is what you can do over 1 GbE (I think the theoretical limit is 117 MB/s without Jumbo frames). If you upgrade to 10 GbE, the SSD SATA interface will limit around 300-330 MB/s. If you make a Raid 0 setup, this can be doubled. To saturate the 10GbE, we would need NVME SSD slots.
Needs good aeration around as it uses passive heating with the massive aluminium top plate.
Basically, this is the only completely silent NAS without a fan that I have found. If you want to place it in your living room, and don't want to be annoyed by the fan noise, there are not many other options out there. Otherwise, the NAS needs to be place somewhere where the 24/7 fan noise is not an issue.
