The fall protection prevents damage in the case of a fall from up to 2m. The OtterBox Symmetry isn't as thick as other cases with fall protection. In fact, it's a quite thin and light case that easily fits in your bag or pocket. The extra sturdy edges protect your touchscreen, because the edges come up slightly higher than the screen. This prevents scratches when you place your phone on the table with the screen facing down or when you drop it. The edges run along all sides and also prevent scratches on your buttons. The case does have a cutout for your charging port.
