How do I prepare my Sonos speaker for use?

The only thing that still exists between you and a working Sonos speaker is the installation process. On this page you can read how to connect the speaker to the socket and connect via your wifi network to your smartphone or tablet. Follow these steps and you're ready to listen to music wirelessly.

What do you need?

 * A Sonos speaker.

  • A smartphone or tablet connected to your wireless network.
  • Wifi network with 2.4 GHz.
  • The password of your wireless network.
  • The Sonos Controller app installed on your smartphone or tablet. Do not you have this yet? Then go to the Apple app store or Google Play and download the Sonos Controller app on your smartphone or tablet. Tip: open this page on your smartphone or tablet, so that after clicking on the links below you go directly to the app.

Connect your Sonos speaker to the power outlet. To do this, use the supplied power cord. You can find the input for the cable at the back of the speaker. With the Play: 1 the input is at the bottom. The speaker light will flash green within 30 seconds. Does not this happen? Then reset your speaker to factory settings. Click on the link below if you do not know how to do this.

The icon of the app is shown in your smartphone's or tablet's main menu. Open the app by tapping or clicking it and select Set up new Sonos system.

In the welcome screen, tap Next. The app will now ask you if you want to perform a Standard or Boost setup. Choose Standard setup.

You'll now be led through 3 screens. The first screen is to confirm that you want to do a standard setup. The second screen prompts you to connect the speaker to AC power. The third screen asks you to check if the LED on the speaker is flashing green. Press Next on all 3 screens.

The app now shows you which speakers are ready to be configured. Tap on your speaker and then on 'Configure this player'. If the app can't find a speaker, it'll ask you what speaker type you want to install. Select your speaker type and tap Next.

If you've already found your speaker during the previous step, you can skip this one. The app will ask you to press 1 or multiple buttons. This creates a temporary network you'll use to connect the device. The app shows you which buttons to press. Once you've done that, the LED on the speaker will flash. The app will ask you if you see it. Once you confirm this, you'll be taken to a loading screen. This shows you that a temporary network is being created.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, skip this step. These devices automatically connect to the speaker. This also applies to devices that connect you to a Play: 5. For example, connect an iPad with the Play: 1? Then you connect the Sonos app by pressing the Home button. Via the settings screen you go to the wifi menu. You can see Sonos between the list of available networks. Press this name, close the settings screen and return to the Sonos Controller app.

The app will now ask for your WiFi network password. Above the entry field, the app shows you which network the speaker is connected to. Is this not your network? Connect your smartphone or tablet to the right network. You can also do this via the WiFi menu as described in the previous step.

The speaker is now connected to your network. This may take several minutes. Halfway through the process, the app asks you to press a number of buttons. With the Play: 1, Play: 3, Play: 5 (gen 1) or Playbar, press the pause and volume plus button simultaneously. In the Play: 5 (gen 2), Sub or Playbase, press the Join button located at the back or side of the design. This button looks like an 8 lying on its side.

Once the speaker has been added, tap Next. The app will ask you if you want to give the speaker a name. Choose 1 from the list or create your own. Want to put multiple speakers in different rooms? In that case, it's a good idea to name the speaker after the type of room, like 'Living room'.

The app will ask you if you want to add another player to your Sonos system. Select 'Not now'. Tap Next in the following screen to register your speaker.

Register your speaker to download updates and add music services. Fill in your email address and tap next. Allow the app to use your location if you're prompted. Tap Next in the next 2 screens to indicate whether the app can store your user data and complete the installation.

Now that the connection has been completed, you can start listening. Choose Set up music service to set up the right streaming service. Don't want to set up a streaming service yet? Tap 'Go to SONOS menu'.
