A neutral density filter changes the intensity of the light your lens lets through. This allows you to be more flexible in your use of shutter speeds and aperture. When you start filming or photographing with a slow shutter speed, your image may become overexposed. With an ND filter, you can block out the excess light, without affecting the color and contrast.
