If you want to immediately see and influence the effect of your conceived light arrangement, you use continuous lighting. These are also referred to as studio lights. The big advantage of this form of exposure is that you immediately see the effect of any adjustments that you make. You immediately see what happens with the light and the shadows. The disadvantage of the studio lights is that if they burn continuously, your studio will quickly become very hot. A solution for this is a cooled lamp or LED light.
