How do you choose a sander?

There are many different types of sanders, but how do you know which one suits you best? That depends on the type of jobs and your personal preference. In this article, we'll explain what you can use different sanders for and what to keep in mind.

Choose a sander

Choose a sander

Before you buy a sander, it's important to ask yourself what you need exactly. Ask yourself the following:

  • Which type of sander do you need?
  • Do you choose a battery or power grid?
  • Which sandpaper do you need?

Which type of sander do you need?

Drywall sanderHigh or very low surfaces, like the ceiling or the floor

Sander battery

Do you choose a battery or power grid?

With a sander that works via the power grid, you depend on the length of the cable and available sockets. With sanders with a battery, this won't be an issue. You have complete freedom of movement, so you can get started anywhere. Do you buy a sander with a battery that's part of a battery platform? In that case, you can also use the battery for other tools of the same brand and the same voltage.

Which sandpaper will you need?

Make sure you choose sandpaper that's suitable for your sander. Keep in the type and size of the sander in mind. A sanding sheet that's too small can damage your tool, and a sheet that's too big is inconvenient. Also keep the grain size in mind:

  • K40-K80: remove old layers of paint
  • K80-K120: sand new wood
  • K120-K180: sand existing layers of paint
  • K180-K240: sand layers of paint and varnish
