Compared to the Bose Companion 2 (2.0), this set is definitely worth the upgrade. The Bose sounded good, but due to the lack of a subwoofer, the bass was not so much represented. I have now donated that set to someone else, because this 2.1 set from Harman Kardon has completely convinced me. The design is unique, feels solid, and also knows how to give a nice sound.
The subwoofer has a control for the bass, and I didn't have to open it very far to get a balanced sound. The volume can be adjusted via the right speaker. When the two buttons are pressed simultaneously , the sound is muted. This is a small trick, which can come in handy on a regular basis.
What is special is that the whole is turned on and off via the subwoofer. The bass button can be pressed for this. It would have been more practical if it was on one of the speakers. The volume buttons can also be found here. Harman/Kardon recommends placing the subwoofer on the floor, which makes it even less practical. I myself have enough space on my desk, and I think I look fine.
So far the set has charmed me in all musical styles; from Beethoven and Vivaldi to Dr Dre, to The Eagles etc. etc. Despite the small woofers, the speakers are perfectly capable of producing clear sound, and the subwoofer can also make itself heard. Be careful not to set the bass too high, because the subwoofer wants to reverberate pretty quickly, which I personally experience as not nice.
An extra plug was also included for non-European sockets. And the possibility to turn the (standard) 3.5 mm plug into tulip plugs.
It's not a cheap set. But even the lady friend is jealous, and she's not easily. Nice and striking set with enough to offer. Definitely don't regret this purchase!
