Nowadays you do a lot via your browser. I use Google Docs, Google Spreadsheet, Microsoft Todo, Gmail, Feedly, Netflix, Pocket and so on... I was looking for a cheap laptop that I could use in the evenings to surf, write, watch videos and therefore a Chromebook seemed ideal to me. It starts up super fast, is compact but at the same time not too small, and it doesn't weigh much. Really perfect to plop on the couch and put on your headset when your wife wants to watch Home, Family, or some program about childbirth again.
Add to that the fact that you can now install a Linux VM, and the possibilities are even greater! For example, I can now install DosBox via the Linux VM to play old DOS games, I can install and develop a code editor, I can set up a server locally to test things...
Nowadays you can also install almost everything from Play Store, although in practice it appears that those apps do not always work very well. In many cases you get the version that is installed on a tablet, which is a lot less user-friendly to use via a laptop (although that might not be the case with Chromebooks with a touchscreen). I then opt to just open the browser version of an app if it exists, and make it a "quick link" that opens in a new window. So it looks like a native app, but works much better!
Super satisfied with this Chromebook, and just with the principle of Chromebooks in general. Recommended if you do a lot via the internet, although the Linux VM now also ensures that internet is not immediately a requirement to use this laptop.
