What's a Ring doorbell?

A doorbell that lets you communicate remotely with the visitor at your door? That's the Ring doorbell. Using the app on your smartphone, you can communicate directly with the person at the door. On this page, you can read how the Ring Video doorbell works exactly and all the things you can do with it.

1. What's the Ring video doorbell?

The Ring doorbell is a WiFi controlled doorbell. Connect the doorbell to your WiFi network and download the free Ring app on your smartphone and tablet (iOS, Android, Windows 10). When you're not home, you can record a video of the person at your door or speak to them directly via the two-way audio. When someone rings your doorbell or if the motion detector detects movement, you'll receive a push notification. By opening the app, you can see who's at your door on the screen of your smartphone or tablet.

List of pros of the Ring doorbell

  • Communicate directly with the visitor at your door from any location
  • The integrated camera offers razor-sharp images.
  • Video recordings at 1 press of a button.
  • With a 180-degree angle, you have a broad overview.
  • Monitor all of your surroundings with the expansion options.

2. What are the possibilities with the Ring video doorbell?

Security

Because you can see exactly who's at your door via the app on your smartphone, you don't have to open the door when somebody rings the bell. If you hear the doorbell, you can first open the app and let the person at the door know you're coming. You could of course also politely ask your visitor to leave.

*Use and control remotely

You can control and use the doorbell remotely via the app on your smartphone. That's the case for all connected Ring doorbells. If you have multiple Ring doorbells around your house – for instance at the front and back door – you can assign individual names to each doorbell via the app, so you'll know exactly at which door someone rang the bell.

Hear sound at home as well

A soon as someone presses the button of the Ring, you'll receive a push notification on your smartphone. There are 2 options for hearing the sound inside the house as well, in addition to on your smartphone or tablet; over your existing indoor bell or over the Ring Chime. If you choose to use the existing indoor bell, you have to connect the doorbell to the existing wires at the front door. If you choose the external receiver – the Ring Chime – you can wirelessly mount the doorbell next to the front door and connect it to the Chime. Note: the Chime isn't included by default with each version.

3. Specific characteristics of the Ring video doorbell

The Ring Doorbell 2 has the most advanced features. For instance, it uses a stable 2.4Ghz WiFi connection. With 1080p HD quality, the image with night vision is razor-sharp (both during the day and at night). Zooming in on a certain element is no problem. Via the two-way audio, you can communicate directly with your visitor. The battery is rechargeable and can be replaced within seconds when necessary. In order to complete the package, the doorbell includes 2 interchangeable fronts. That means you can decide which color suits your front door best.

4. Store and use videos

It's possible to store the images that have been recorded. For that, you need the Ring Video Recording Plan. This is a subscription that you can pay in monthly or annual fees. Are you going to choose this additional option? You'll get a personal account where the recorded images are stored for up to 60 days. There are 2 different subscriptions.
