The Nokia 2720 Flip Red 4GB is a traditional flip phone, but with cellular internet. You're always connected to the internet with 4G. This allows you to use WhatsApp, for example. A much better KaiOS phone than last year's 8110 4G

I had a Nokia 8110 4G the first phone with KaiOS available in the Netherlands and I have been using it for over a year. But I ran into a number of things that made using it less pleasant. Many of those problems have been solved with the 2720 Flip, but a number of them belong to this operating system (KaiOS) and will therefore not disappear.

Phone: The 2720 Flip is a handy device and in my opinion it is the most beautiful in the grey/black color scheme. The color gray is very reminiscent of the gray of the computer cases from the 90s.

The flip mechanism is smooth and clicks satisfactorily into its maximum open and close position. Because you can open the phone, there is a lot of space inside to build everything nice and spacious. As a result, the screen is large and the keys are wonderfully large. I have quite thick thumbs and the buttons on the 8110 4G are very small and delicate because of the sliding mechanism.

The screen on the outside is just a color screen although it looks like a black and white screen when you see the pictures. Very handy because this operating system briefly switches on the screen during a synchronization, when your phone is closed, only your outer screen is switched on.

The memory is small but enough to use the phone. I also put some music on it and a 32 GB memory card is really needed.

What makes this phone unique compared to other phones with KaiOS is that it has a volume button. All other devices with KaiOS (and there are now quite a few) do not have that. There is also an emergency/assistant button that you can set as an emergency button that automatically tries to call 5 numbers (in succession) if you long press it and then immediately put the phone on speaker. Very useful if you are less sure of yourself and, for example, want to warn your children if you have fallen or something. I use the same button as the assistant button, by pressing it the google assistant turns on, which you can then ask questions like you can with an android phone. Unfortunately, the assistant is not yet in Dutch, so that is not of much use (I will come back to that later). There are also possibilities to make the phone work together with hearing aids, but I have no experience with that.

The battery is a bit small, I personally would have preferred that they had put in an even larger battery. You can do with these phones if you use all functions about 3 to 4 days. But then you also have agenda, mail & whatsapp synchronization all on. The 28 days that you hear them about is really nonsense.

The connections are stable and work well. I still have to try the Bluetooth connection that was a bit difficult with the 8110 so that I had to log in manually in the car every time. But that seems like a software problem to me. My car is not available right now so I haven't tested that yet.

Then the operating system, KaiOS.

The main reason for buying a phone with an alternative operating system is that I wanted to get rid of my smartphone addiction. But because you can no longer do without whatsapp in the Netherlands these days, that is very difficult. The Nokia 8110 4g promised me to become a phone with Whatsapp without all the extra addictive things that make a normal smartphone so attractive to my brain. That was the reason I bought it, but because of the cramped keyboard, typing text was sometimes quite annoying. The 8110 also regularly hits double keys, so that you type the wrong word in combination with t9 word recognition. The 2720 Flip does not have these problems.

KaiOS is a system that is made for slow mobile phones and so it just doesn't have a number of things. The first thing it doesn't have are apps. Yes, there is a market place, but apps are emerging and more and more apps are added every month (sometimes a few times a week), but so far they have not been apps that help you. Which is also an advantage because I hardly use any data anymore, I have 6 GB every month but I only use 500 MB including watching YouTube videos.

The following is a list that I have run into over the past year:

No Spotify or other music streaming apps (be sure to come)
No bank app is not in it I have ING and that site does not work either you can not log in.
No parking apps.
No apps for your car entertainment (Apple carplay or Android Auto)
No point to point navigation (TomTom).
No podcast app.
I can't control my Sonos with it.

There are things like google maps in it but it does not provide (spoken) point to point navigation. so you have to check your screen every time to see what the next traffic turn is. This is of course very unsafe and subject to fines in the car, so it is pointless. You can use it while walking in the city.

Sync has gotten much better in this version of KaiOS. You can now also sync your phone book with google so that your contacts remain stored in the cloud.

Oh and you can now add words in the dictionary too. Something that was not possible with a previous version of KaiOS. He didn't know the word "de" and every sentence with "de" in it was a hassle to type (or den or dé). Fortunately, you can now add things useful for names of so that "chair leg" doesn't come out when you mean "Samantha".

Mail: Reading emails is possible, but it is so small that it is no longer possible these days. An e-mail with text in it is possible, but the e-mails from companies are so full of images and large blocks of extra junk underneath that reading e-mails is quite a task.

Calendar: You can use a calendar via the google calendar (but a local calendar is also possible) but it only shows your main calendar. I also have a work agenda and my wife's agenda and KaiOS can't show it, so every week I am still copying/pasting things from one agenda to the other, which is very annoying.

Music player: Well this one works fine. But it doesn't remember where you left off and so it starts over every time you start it. Not very bad for music. But if you want to listen to an audiobook, it's impossible because you start at the front every time. However, it can continue to play when your phone is on standby and with the buttons you can set louder and softer properly.

Radio: Hooray, there is an FM radio in it, I would have preferred a DAB + radio in it, but this also works fine, but only if you connect headphones as an antenna. Which by the way are not included in the Dutch edition of this device.

The assistant: The advantage of the assistant (in theory) is that you can talk and the google assistant will type it out for you. You can also say things like "Call Bep" and he will call Bep from your phone book. "Play some Queen" and it plays a youtube video of Queen. If he can't find anything, the assistant shows a google search with results. The assistant gets a lot from Wikipedia and can do basic things, but unfortunately the assistant can't set a timer (which I used it for before).

Unsubscribing seems very useful to me with whatsapp then you dictate what you want to say and the assistant types it out for you. That saves a lot of pressing buttons. HOWEVER, the assistant is NOT available in Dutch, but in German, French and English and Hindi, etc. That is a real drawback because it would make this device so much easier and more user-friendly. Especially for an older audience, which I rather see using an assistant than typing something via T9. And "how tall is the Eiffel Tower?" is really too long to tap on a keyboard.
