PocketBook InkPad One

I specifically looked for a large-format eReader of European manufacture and ended up with this eReader.

Mainly bought it for reading online newspapers. That works, but it is very slow. Downloading a PDF and reading it works much better. Putting books on it and reading them is very smooth. Nice thin and sleek design. The screen responds excellently to touch. Taking notes works, but is less relevant to me.

Pros:

• Transferring books via email is great and easy. I read books from the OBA, PDFs, and textbooks. It works well.

• I can save the newspaper as a PDF via the web browser and read it easily.

• Notes in the notebook also work well. Easy with the pencil, and you create a notepad account.

• Audiobooks from all providers can be listened to, which is an advantage compared to Kobo.

• Good for older people; the buttons are large, it seems a bit designed for the elderly.

• Translation with the dictionary is only available in English. For example, there is no Dutch-French option in the download, which does exist on Kobo.

• The read-aloud function is nice in English and French, but less so for Dutch or German.

• A nice e-reader for people who want the feeling of actually holding a book in their hands and want to read PDFs or textbooks (reading only without notes). Cons:

• A different cable is needed to connect to the laptop than the one included, and due to the lack of a manual, I had to Google everything.

• If you are used to Kobo, navigating through a book takes some getting used to.

• Smartlight is not as good as on the Kobo. I miss the setting where the e-reader automatically adjusts the lighting to a warm light based on the time. The Smartlight is not as warm as on the Kobo.

• Exporting pencil annotations in PDFs and books is not possible. Only photos of the page and highlights are exported. The only option to export pencil annotations is to take a photo of every page. It is also not possible to copy the PDF with annotations to the laptop to view the pencil notes there. The pencil annotations remain available only on the e-reader. That makes the pencil feature quite useless. If you want to take notes, it is best to only highlight or type notes using the keyboard function, or you have to take photos of the notes all the time. Or you buy another e-reader or Remarkable. This one is not suitable for that.

Conclusion:

I am unsure whether I should keep this e-reader. I find it very unfortunate that I can no longer download my PDF with notes on it to read them on a laptop, and that it is so cumbersome to be able to view my pencil notes again. On the other hand, it is nice to read textbooks on it because of the large screen. Graphs are clearly visible.
