How do you pay with your smartphone?
Nowadays, most smartphones are suitable for making contactless payments. That's useful, because it'll save you a lot of hassle with wallets and cards. In this article, we'll explain how contactless payments with your smartphone work and how you can make your mobile phone suitable for this feature.
Make contactless payments with your smartphone
You can make mobile payments via a QR code with every smartphone, but you'll need the right phone for payments via NFC. We'll also give tips on the Payconiq app and payments at the cashier.

Smartphone with NFC
You can make contactless payments with your phone in 2 ways, via NFC or via a QR code. If you want to make contactless payments with NFC, you need a smartphone with NFC. This secure chip is also used in your bank card, for example. You can turn on NFC via the settings menu. Open 'Settings' and type 'NFC' into the search bar. Tap the settings for NFC to activate your NFC chip.
Payconiq app
To be able to make contactless payments, you'll first have to connect your bank account to your smartphone. You can do this with the Payconiq by Bancontact app. Download this app on your phone and go through the steps to register and activate your device. After this, you'll be ready to make contactless payments with your phone. You can do this via NFC or with a QR code.
Pay via NFC
Making contactless payments via NFC only works with a suitable card reader. These PIN device are recognizable by the logo for contactless payments. You can usually find this logo (and the sensor) on the side or screen of the device. Press the standby button on your phone to wake it up. Hold it against the PIN device and you'll have paid. Is the amount more than € 25? You'll have to enter a PIN code first and hold the smartphone near the device again.
Pay via a QR code
Doesn't your smartphone have NFC? You can make contactless payments in the store via a QR code. Tell the cashier that you want to pay with the Payconiq by Bancontact app. The employee will show you a QR code. This can be on paper (a sticker) or on the screen of the Bancontact device. Scan the code with the Payconiq by Bancontact app on your phone and you'll have paid right away. You'll have to enter a PIN code to confirm amounts above € 25.
Apple Pay
Do you have an iPhone? You can also make contactless payments with Apple Pay. This works on the iPhone, but also on the iPad and Apple Watch. In our advice article, you can learn how to set up Apple Pay. You'll also find a list of the banks that support this payment method here.
