Samsung region lock: what is it and how do you get rid of it?

Samsung smartphones have region lock. Region lock ensures that devices intended for the Asian market can't be used in Europe, and vice versa. The purpose of this is to prevent appliances from being bought in a certain market and being sold in another. But how does that affect you as a Samsung user and customer?

Samsung region lock, what is it?

Samsung region lock, what is it?

Region lock ensures that you can only use a SIM card from the market the device is intended for. In other words: if you buy a Samsung smartphone via the official retailers in the Netherlands, it's a device for the European market, so you can only use a European SIM card. The same applies to a Samsung smartphone bought in Japan. It's intended for the Asian market and can therefore only be used in Asia at first.

Samsung region lock: when is it inconvenient?

The Samsung region lock is only inconvenient if you use a SIM card in the device that doesn't come from the market the device is intended for. In other words: you buy a European model Samsung and want to use it with an Asian SIM card. Or vice versa. It won't work. Fortunately, the Samsung region lock is relatively easy to remove.

Samsung region lock: how do you get rid of it?

Easy. If you call someone, or someone calls you, by using a SIM card from the region the device is meant for, the region lock permanently and automatically lapses after 5 minutes. Let's use the example above. Say you want to use a European Samsung phone with an Asian SIM card. To remove the region lock, you make a 5-minute phone call using a European SIM card. After that, you can use a SIM card from any region in your Samsung smartphone.
